What Size AC Do I Need?
A lot of Orange County homes still have the same undersized units that were installed 30 or 40 years ago. They worked fine back then, but summers are hotter now and those systems can't keep up. Going too big creates a different problem: an oversized unit short-cycles, wasting energy and wearing out faster.
We use Manual J load calculations to size your system correctly. That means looking at your square footage, insulation levels, the number and orientation of your windows, ceiling height, sun exposure, and how many people live in the home.
As a general guide, homes between 1,000 and 1,500 square feet typically need a 2 to 2.5 ton system. At 1,500 to 2,000 square feet, you're looking at 2.5 to 3 tons. A 2,000 to 2,500 square foot home usually needs 3 to 3.5 tons, and 2,500 to 3,000 square feet calls for 3.5 to 4 tons. Anything over 3,000 square feet typically requires a 4 to 5 ton unit or a zoned system. But every house is different, which is why we calculate it rather than guess.
Understanding SEER Ratings
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures how efficiently an AC system cools your home. Higher SEER means lower energy bills.
California requires a minimum of 14 SEER for new installations. A 16 SEER system saves about 15% on cooling costs compared to that baseline. Jump to 18 SEER and you're saving around 22%. Systems rated 20 SEER or higher can cut cooling costs by 30% or more.
